They’re caused when stuff gets trapped in the crypts of your tonsils and forms a white chunk of something that smells like concentrated hell. Their medical name is tonsillith."

It is Mucus. If it is dark in color and smells bad, you may have some sort of infection. You should probably see a doctor about getting some antibiotics.

Tonsils are the part of our body's immunity, they are the "sample" of bacteria and viruses that enter the body through mouth or nose at the risk of their own infection. At some times, they become more of a liability than an asset and may even trigger airway obstruction or repeated bacterial infections. The causes of tonsil stones are:
1. environmental toxin.
2. sinus infections.
3. allergy.
4. stress.
5. alcohol, and many more.
The tonsil stones should be removed. Natural/self treatments for Tonsil Stones
1. gargle with warm water with salt or non-alcoholic mouth wash.
2. clean the tongue with a tongue cleaner.
3. drink adequate water to prevent mouth dryness and halitosis (bad breath).
