I can not give you a 'general consensus', I did what I believe was right for me.
That is how any tattoo should be, what is right for the person that is looking to get the tattoo.
I have one a large black one on my hand and some smaller ones on my arm. Also I have one on my breast, upper back and a large one on my calf.
Every tattoo has a 'story' behind why I chose them.
Most of them I can cover for when I need to "blend in" for business or whatever.
The one on my hand was put there for spiritual purposes and I do not try to hide it, but at the same time I do caution people!!!
Do not put something on a very visible place unless you are truly ready and understand what you are doing to yourself and your life.
There are those in our society that will judge you on the fact that you have a tattoo, they are getting fewer but they are still there.

As long as you're over 18, it should be an adult decision made by that person. I'm a ridiculously fickle person (have had over 10 piercings in 3 years) and cannot easily commit to something that'll be on my body for the rest of my life. I have a one year rule. I have to want a tattoo for one year, placement, design, color, etc unchanged. If I change the desired location, start the year over. If it is in a visible spot, I'll laminate the picture of the tattoo and tape it on the location and wear it around for a month. It looks silly, but it gets you used to people trying to see what you have on your body. If you can take it, that is a good sign. If not, choose another location.

As a woman, I'm also a fan of tatts in places that won't stretch. After I'm done having kids, I may get one on my stomach, but not before.

As for themes, I think this is such a personal question. In general, I just think you should have a good reason to get a tattoo because you'll be explaining it for the rest of my life. If you get just a butterfly cause it is cute, you may not enjoy telling people that as much as a drawn out story about how a piece of artwork effected your life.

Well i happen to think if they are done with good thought and meaning that it is beautiful! I really don't like it when people say things like you'll look like a guy if you get one! if i never even said i have tattoos you would never even know! I personally think Tattoos are ok and there are plenty of cultures that have men and women with tattoos! The issue comes from the old western european traditions and it has adapted into America and soon to be other countries! The more it spread out the more the other people lost their own culture. You can say tattoos arent for Women or anyone for that matter. Thats their opinion but Never look at them like they are a piece of dirt because they have one or more! The person is still a person! I demand respect by showing respect. If you don't respect me or treat me different because i have one, that just shows your own ignorance to other people! Which in my opinion is almost as bad as racism.

I think that tattoos are such a personal statement. I don't really care what people think about me and my tattoos. I'm attractive, well dressed and I have tattoos and piercings.
Judge me based on what you see, if you want, but you'll never get to know the real me that way.
I'm 40 years old, tattooed and pierced. It shouldn't matter to anybody how old I am, or where my tattoos are. Each of my tattoos means something to me, and I'll probably still be getting tattooed 10 years from now.

Any age 18 or over. Even if you're 50. Placement - a tramp stamp of course. This is the tasteful and best place if you're trolling (but gotta wear those hipster jeans to show it off). Theme - Cowgirl!! Ride em' partner!

One must, as you point out, first define "humor". There are many varieties and emotional motivations. For example, a highly worried population enjoys slapstick, slipping on a banana peel type humor. A more aggressive / violent population, such as prison and boys' schools populations, enjoys anal humor, the poop jokes and such. A highly verbally censoring and inhibited population enjoys oral humor. An insecure population enjoys sexist and racist humor. Adolescent populations enjoy sexual jokes. And so on. It depends upon who is dominating the entertainment industry at the time and the general mood of the society as to what flavor of humor is prominent. I have done some vulgar stand-up amateur comedy and won some money doing humor aimed at the realities and frustrations of single motherhood and its inherent poverty, stuff like that private moment of deliberation over what kind of vegetable to warm up in the microwave at night after the children are bathed and put to bed to use as a personal companion. : )

I get sick of girls with their trashy "tramp stamps" from drunken Spring Breaks. They are always on their lower back, lower hip, or ankle and the common themes seem to be Chinese symbols, butterflies, hearts, stars, names, fairies or dragonflies.

There is nothing original about getting a tattoo and I think it's dumb to permanently deface your skin for something that you think is pretty or cool when you are 18 years old.

The only time I think tattoos are cool is when people have a lot of meaning and thought behind them- or when it has been designed especially for them (I hate when people just pick them off the wall of the tattoo parlor).

For example, if someone has completed a Marathon or Iron Man, I think it is acceptable to get a tattoo symbolizing that triumph. If someone has lost someone they love, I think it acceptable to get a tattoo commemorating their life. If someone is incredibly passionate about something (and I don't mean their sorority/fraternity!), I think that is OK...though you'll probably regret having your ex-boyfriend's name or a dolphin etched into your skin 20 years from now!

who cares? everyone has different opinions on the subject and none of them pertain to anyone but themselves. Age placement and theme or lack there of is all based on the individual man or woman
