It's a delivery vehicle that can get a rapid reaction force anywhere in the world in two hours or less. The "plane" would travel at hyperspeed while in the thinnest part of the atmosphere.

The attempt to develop it is more important than the plane itself. Much of the technology you use everyday grew out of military projects. GPS is a military program. The Internet grew from ARPAnet. It was originally any attempt to create a decentralized network that could not be disabled by destroying critical sites. Odds are, any technology you name began as, or was significantly advanced for military uses. The primary use on early computers was computing weapons firing tables.

Why the Marines would need a space plane is beyond me. I've never heard a thing about it, and it doesn't sound very realistic. Never knew we were planning an invasion on Jupiter, but with Bush at the helm... hell, maybe there's oil there.
