I always start dark and punch the lights. I let the layers dry between colors. Looks like a lot of people do the opposite....might be worth your while to find your own path.

Every artist has their style, but generally the simplest way to learn oils is to "block in" your composition first using a middle tone (not dark or light). For this first layer, use paint thinned with turps or solvent (not linseed oil) so it will dry quickly. Then work from dark to light. The best reason to do this is that Titanium White oil paint actually dries more slowly than other colours.
The method can be the same for either oils or acrylics, keeping in mind that acrylics are thinned with medium instead of solvent. Remember that transparent colours will not easily cover other colours, and this is true with both oils and acrylics.
Oils may take up to six weeks to dry, whereas acrylics will be safe to transport within hours.
Transparency is listed on your paint tube - ie. Alizarine, Carmine, Quinachridone reds are transparent, Napthol, Pyrrole reds are semi-opaque, true Cadmiums are opaque.
Have fun!

First of all, you should paint a thin layer of white oil paint onto the canvas (unless it's pre-coated). I normally paint on the lighter colors first and then I add detail with darker colors. The painting blends better that way. Good Luck with your project!

Put the light colors on first, then carefully apply the darker tones, a lot of times I do my mixing and blending directly on the canvas. It gives the color more depth and texture.
