If the cat still has it's claws, you have nothing to worry about... the CAT will teach the dog.
My 85 lb black lab has a very healthy respect for cats due to a lesson well learned ONCE, by getting too close.

Cairn Terrier And Cats

Cairn terriers were bred to get vermin (rats, mice, gophers, etc). Sometimes small kitties can resemble vermin to the dog so it is disinctly possible that he could try to chase them because that is what they were bred to do! IMHO, most dogs can be taught anything. I also agree with the answer that said that claws can teach lessons quickly!
If you have a cat that you are worried about, I would ask if you can take the pup on a trial basis and see if it works out. Hope it works out for you!

Most dogs will chase cats but most dogs won't hurt them. Dogs chase each other for fun, and they do the same to cats.
If you have a cat of your own, the dog and the cat will become friends in time. Don't separate them, just let them get acquainted. In time, the cat will run from the dog only if it wants to. Cats often find this to be fun also, but not as much as dogs do. You could teach the dog not to do this if you want to.
When you first get the dog, the cat may be scared of him, but they will get used to each other.
If you have cats in the neighborhood that don't live with you, it might be harder to teach him not to chase them; but most likely he won't hurt them. For one thing, he probably can't catch them.
