You might ask the older person to tell you something about his past. "What was Christmas like when you were a little boy/girl?"
You could ask anyone what his favorite memory is of some event (holiday, celebration, etc.)

The best way to start a conversation is to say hello, introduce yourself, and give the person a sincere compliment like, 'that is such a pretty hat. Where did you get it?' By asking an open question, you'll find yourself in a conversation before you know it!

Some people aren't in the mood to talk sometimes, so if they don't respond, you can say, 'well, it was nice talking to you. have a nice day,' and go about your business.
