My friend is cutting. She is seeing a counselor, but is not taking the counselors advice. What can I do?

You can't stop her.

Don't try. You can only change if you want to.

If she is seeing a counselor about it but you know for a fact she is not complying to the therapist's orders you can talk to a teacher or guidence counselor who in return will get her the help she needs.


Just remember you are not a doctor, you can't fix her but you can get the attention of those who can.

You can talk to someone annonomusly or if you know she'll know that its you, then let her hate you, she'll thank you in the long run and even if she doesn't at least you know you did all you could do to help her.

A long time ago I used to burn my right arm, a friend saw the marks and told a school offical. I am almost 3 years cut free and I thank my friend everyday.

Almost 100% of cutters where sexually molested, usually as a child. It's not easy dealing with this type of abuse. I know from first hand experience. If the counselor isn't helping keep looking until she finds the right one. It won't be easy and will take a lot of work on her part to stop. Cutting temporarily releases the mental pain that was caused by the abuse. She hasn't learned of any other way to release the pain and needs to find other ways to handle it. Facing what has happened and knowing that she was not to blame is a beginning. God bless. I pray things work out for her.

Well... your going to get alot of "Pray" and "Jesus help her" types of responces... and those people likely don't understand you >.>

The truth is there is nothing you can do. Harsh huh. The BEST you can do is YELL THE SENSE INTO YOUR FRIENDS HEAD. If your friends,.. if your their best friend,.. you are the only person they are seriously going to listen to and allow to over ride whatever has decided to kick around in their brain and make them self destructive.

Nothing more annoying when your depressed then a prissy former cheerleader (studies and statistics suggest their Counselor could easily have been a Cheerleader or something similar,.. this is one of like three fields those people go into as adults) that is a stranger and knows nothing about you being opinunated and trying to be controling of your life. This flares the opposite reaction,.. much like running from the biggest jock,.. I mean jerk... that's a bully in school.

Get them a Hobby, tell them their Councelor is obviously sucking,.. let them know they are being retarded and if they want to get hurt the right way they should do it while trying to accomplish something... like climbing a wall or building something. Give them something distracting to do. Introduce them to some games/chats/forums and tell them to be whatever they want on them because they can be whatever they want on them... and hope they get some things out they can't tell you.

Let their Counselor know things weren't working out,.. tell them it's things they can't see an they aren't telling them,.. have the system try to fish your friend a counselor more towards her understanding,.. eventurally there will be one that is a Counselor because they did the same things to themselves and knows how to get over it or supress it.

Make them feel like the things (cuts) are ugly and not going to look good at a funeral.. people will just be like " Oh hell,.. that stuff is ugly,.. if they didn't care about their body they didn't have anything worth remembering... whose funeral are we at again?"

you need to be real friend and talk to her. if you have to tell her parents about it you friend might not like that but it would be more helpfull in the longrun

well for one thing your friend is not stupid its a disorder and people need serious help with that condition.....you should try an intervention!
