One cat is nasty, the other is tolerant. Tonight when the ball landed next to the nasty one, my almost year-old golden retriever wouldn't go near it but she would have if it was the other cat. So my dog just sat and whined at me. How did she know?

Smell is the key. It is a good chance that Nasty was nasty to the pup. Dogs associate everything with smell. I had a persian that all she had to do to my dog was hiss and the dog went the other way. Now at one time my cat had hissed at my dog as well as swatted her in the nose. The dog didn't want anything to do with the cat and the dog out weighed the cat by 20 pounds. The dog didn't get close to the cat's bed, or anything the cat had been close to.

Both cats have a different smell to the dog. They have very strong noses so they can tell. That's why dogs are used for hunting. If the dog smells one, he will be able to tell.

Dogs use their sense of smell the way we use our sense of sight. So your dog can tell because the two cats smell differently and it's sense of smell points this out to her. Yours and your mother's isn't as keen.
