Como esta is the formal way of saying it. If you're familiar with the person and they're not older than you, you can say como estas.

if you are unfamilliar with the person or want to sound respectful you say:
Como Esta ...you can add 'usted' if you want to be proper
If you are close to them like a family member or friend you add an 's'
Como estas?
If it's a friend and you want to be cool you say:
Que Paso?!
which loosely translated means 'whats up?'
