Seroquel (Quetiapine) was originally developed as an antipsychotic medication. Its uses, however, have greatly expanded since its release in 1997. Current uses include as a treatment (either alone or in combination with other medications) for: psychotic symptoms, psychotic disorders, severe mood disorders, refractory anxiety, and refractory insomnia. When used for psychotic symptoms or disorders or for severe mood disorders doses of at least 500 mg per day are typically used. For refractory anxiety and insomnia doses under 300 mg per day are most common. While the FDA has only approved the use of Seroquel for psychotic and severe mood disorders, practitioners rely on anecdotal evidence and personal experience when deciding which medications to prescribe and at what doses. So Seroquel may be used by an individual practitioner for lesser-known indications such as ADHD and Factitious Disorders. Consequently, the only way to know why a particular individual is taking Seroquel is to ask the prescriber.

This medication is used with or without other medications to treat certain mental/mood conditions (e.g., manic phase of bipolar disorder, schizophrenia). Quetiapine is known as an anti-psychotic drug (atypical type). It works by helping to restore the balance of certain natural chemicals (neurotransmitters) in the brain.

This medication can decrease hallucinations and improve your concentration. It helps you to think more clearly and positively about yourself, feel less nervous, and take a more active part in everyday life. Quetiapine can help prevent severe mood swings or decrease how often mood swings occur.

It's an anti-psychotic/anti-depressant. but beware: There is some evidence of a link between this drug and the onset of diabetes and pancreatitis.
