We went for a walk on the sidewalk and a car was backing out of the driveway just as we were getting to it. She started barking at it. Was it to alert me, to alert the driver, or simply because she was threatened by it herself?

alert you and alert the driver to be cautious because she was looking out for her owner/master. some dogs like barking rather than growling. the latter is more a keep away from us, defining a territory around you.
just quiet her and give her the o.k. she did fine unless too aggressive and it was not needed.

That's pretty hard to tell from that description. She may have been startled by it, and barked as a sign of fear or as an alert to you.

Both. Protecting you aggressively and being scared s*it less to what was happening with the big thing coming towards the 2 of you.

She saw something close to her humans and was barking for attention.
