there are specialized baits that are used in the UK and are slowly gaining popularity here in the US. As for popular baits here in the US corn, wheat germ balls and homemade baits are great. A quick easy dough bait recipe is as follows:
1 cup water
1 cup oatmeal
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 package strawberry jello
2 teaspoons anise seed {optional}

Bring the water to a boil add vanilla and all other dry ingredients mix well. remove from heat and continue mixing until a ball is formed. place the ball on wax paper to cool. when cool to the touch place inside a ziplock bag.

I like to use a #4 treble hook with no weight and use a golf ball size ball of bait formed onto the hook. I first chum the area with canned corn them throw out into the middle of the area where I threw the corn

One liter Big Red or Red Cream Soda
One large "cheap" box of Corn Flakes

Mix the two together till you get a thick tacky pastes. It's just that easy, and it barley if ever comes of the hook!! I use it when I bowfish and even when I'm shooting at them they just sit there and keep eating from the bait bag. Good luck.

Best bait is absolutely canned whole kernel corn. Fill a long shanked hook with it and wait.

Use Boilies, they are suckers for them! (boil them for about 15 minutes for best effects)
