She looked amerindian compared to the Spaniards, of course, but Mary was Middle Eastern and may actually have looked like that.

Dude, she was supernatural by then! She travelled in disguise! Nobody's was going to listen to the Indian kid without some serious credentials. Mary was telling the archbishop she identified with these people.

You don't have to believe it. Juan could have made it all up. He could have painted his serape with that beautiful image, then gone on to a successful career as a street artist. But history does not record this.

Juan Diego appears to be a fictional character because of lack of hisotric documents. Canonization, election of popes and other important catholic rites are due to Vatican political motives. Why? John Paul II was elected pope because of the political environment at the time in Poland and to bring a peace of mind to catholic Polish. Juan Diego is the same in the mexican panorama because of the massive convertion into protestant churches (evangelic in latin american termns). And this thing isn't just happening in Mexico, it's happening in all latin america, thats why catholics are copying many protestant style speeches at mass (screaming, singing in salsa like rythms, even joking). Besides Juan Diego for being indigenous it will "repay" for the slaughterings and impossal of catholisism in american indigenous people (yup american because America is from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego in Argentina not just the USA).

That's my point of view
