Strong coffee works fine, too. I use a French press, but you're probably getting the same strength from the stovetop pot.

All you'll need in addition is some foamed milk. You can use a milk frother, or just microwave about 1/4 to 1/2 cup of milk for 30 sec. or so, until it's warm and whisk it until it gets frothy. Add it to the coffee, and sweeten to taste. Yummy! :)

To be honest, it costs a lot....initially. But once you get the hardware, the cost per latte is really not that much.
You need a good espresso machine and some good coffee beans.

You cannot get a cheap espresso machine that just cooks with steam. To get the crema (the magic ingredient) from the bean, you need to get a machine that works with at least 15 bar of pressure. Hence, the machine will cost you a couple of hundred dollars. Check out www.coffeegeeks.com. They have reviews for all kinds of good espresso machines.

The beans will need to good quality (probably $9/lb at least). You can get good beans from your local coffee shop. The beans also need to be fresh (under two weeks old).

Make the coffee and steam the milk according to the espresso make directions.

I also add the different Coffeemate flavored creamers to my milk to make really tasty lattes. I never go a day without having at least one!!

You don't have to use espresso, but I have an espresso machine so that's what I use. Here is my recipe for an Irish cream latte breve:

Cafe Mocha Latte:

1 1/2 cups half-and-half
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 cups strong brewed coffee or espresso
1/4 cup chocolate syrup
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 cup whiskey (optional)

Heat half-and-half in a saucepan over medium-high heat. (Do not boil.) Remove from heat; stir in brown sugar, next 3 ingredients, and, if desired, whiskey. Serve warm or over ice.

Yield: 4 cups
