We've had cats for years and they always co-existed pretty well with the Christmas tree, just snatching an occasional ornament. Now we have two kittens (11 months) and I am resigned to the fact that they will climb the tree. I will spray it with cat repellant, but that will probably not help much. I'm not going to stand guard by the tree all day with a squirt bottle or can of rocks.
Tomorrow we are going to go get the tree. I plan to buy one that is as densely packed as possible. We already bought a new sturdier stand and may have to fortify it with sand bags. Also, we bought new LED lights that are coated with plastic, and plan to use only non-breakable ornaments.
By the time they are 2 or 3 years, we probably won't have this problem any more.

there is a spray you can buy at the pet store, it works for a while but you need to spray it and around it regularly, also get an empty spray bottle and put water in it, when the cat is near or in the tree sharply say no! and squirt very close to kitty it will startle it, we use the squirter for other things too and just the site of it usually will stop them. You may also want to rid your tree of anything breakable or easily edible! We have a toddler this year so I kept the decorations simple no garland, no balls just lights and red bows. I thought it would be dull be absolutely everyone has commented on how beautiful it is??? A few people have said it look like it belongs in a magazine! Hey and it is mostly cat and kid proof!
Good Luck!

The nerve of some people...get rid of the cat, put the cat outside(what if your cat is indoors), amputate his legs...People are just idiots!!! I am a expert on this subject...I have 2 adult cats and 1 kitten that i got 5 weeks ago from the shelter. I put up my christmas tree 2 weeks ago and bought the pine spray for trees at walgreens...It works for the kitten and one of the adult cats...I spray it on the tree twice daily and they hate the smell..for my other adult cat, he could care less about the smell and i squirt him with water once every year and he does not try it again until the next year. Good luck!!! I love my cats!!!

Keep a water bottle in your hand and keep a close eye on the tree. If it's on a table, squirt the cat if he looks like he's thinking about jumping up there. If it's on the floor, squirt him whenever he goes near it. He will soon learn to keep a safe distance. We are having the same problem at my house with our two kittens, and they are very quickly learing that Christmas tree=water!

You can try putting tinfoil around the bottom of your tree, cats really don't like the stuff! They also don't like lemon. I have grated lemon rinds around the tree base, they stayed away from the tree and it smelled great! Remember not to put tinsel on your tree, cats really love the stuff, it can get stuck in a cat (or dogs) intestinal tract and may need to be removed surgically.
Good luck!

I put an electric train around my tree. As long as that little train is running the cat is not in the tree.

sadly, i have found after about 5 to 6 years with my cats, there is no possible way to keep them out BUT you CAN anchor it. i use piano wire to tie it so they can get in there and not knock it down. even though you might see a bit of it, it's better than a fallen tree, well, in my opinion
