A blue-Ray disc is new DVDs for HD, along with HD DVD.

The difference, and the cause for the name is the fact that instead of a red laser, the CDs are read with a Blue laser. The blue light has a shorter wave length and therefor can be much more accurate in reading. So you can have thinner lines of code, and therefor alot more space. Enough space for true 1080p HD movies and beautiful surround sound. But you need a Blue-Ray disc reader, or HD DVD reader, neither are compatible with one another.

armestam was right but he forgot to add that blu ray disks can hold up to 50 GB of files when DVDs can only store up to 8.7 GB.
