My female cat is 2 years old, but yet unspayed because she only weighs about 3 pounds. She was the runt of the litter, and I am hesitant to have the operation done. I have two other spayed females, one of whom was spayed at about a year younger but a pound heavier, with no complications - except that afterward, she blew up to about 10 pounds. Is it safe to spay this one at this age?

Looking for replies from qualified veterinary personnel, but I welcome input from owners who have experience with this situation. Thanks.

cats can be spayed as early at 4-6 months. If the cat is that small maybe your vet can examine your cat for a medical reason for the cat to be so small. if there is nothing medically wrong then there should be no reason that your cat cannot be spayed . The longer you wait to spay her the higher her risk of cancer and pyometra

First of all I'm wondering how any cat could be 2 years old and only weigh 3 pounds. I have a 5 month old kitten who was the runt of the litter, and she is already 4.5 pounds. Anyway, a cat is never too old to be spayed, they can always have kittens, but the risk of complications in surgery is greater if the cat is older.

Well if she is 2 years and 3 pounds she isnt healthy. I would get her checked for feline aids and FIP and Feline Leukimia. Also put her on a monthly cat dewormer. Cats can get spayed from 8 weeks as long as they are 5 pounds. 2 years old is fine but try to have her gain more weight. Consider feeding her a kitten food with more calories than regular food. Also, spaying and neutering doesnt make a cat gain weight. I think that getting a cat fixed at up to 9 years is fine except if they have any diseases or problems.

2 years old is NOT to old to spay your cat. The only concern your veterinarian will have is her size. I work at a vet clinic, and i also have a young cat who is three pounds and In Heat right now. Because she is only 6 months old (which is the normal age they are spayed) my veterinarian recommended i waited a little longer so she could gain some more weight before we spayed her. I would talk to your vet about it, and they will tell you what is best.

Here is what my vet told me.....

Spayed cats are healthier, have fewer medical emergencies and live longer. Spaying is always desirable at any age. The limiting factor is the safety level of anesthesia at various ages. In general, most cats can be safely anesthetized from six weeks to twelve years of age. Many cats are are quite strong at healthy many years past twelve. The best plan is to have your veterinarian examine her and run a blood panel. If all checks out fine, proceed with the surgery. She'll be happier and healthier in the long run.

I'm a vet tech and the vet I work for spays cats at 4months or 4 pounds, whichever comes first. She's definitely old enough now. Go ahead and have her spayed.

You can spay at almost any age. The older (7years +) requires a gentler anesthesia, but it is still possible. I would talk to your vet about the best way to spay your cat. She is not to old and becuase of her weight I would GUESS that they would probably put her under gas anesthesia to better monitor how far she goes under. Good luck and I hope this helps

2 years old would not be too old to spay your cat. Talk to your vet about your concerns and he should be able to alleviate some of them.

I know cats and dogs are different, but we just had out 9 year old dog fixed and he didn't have any problems with it, your cat should be fine with the operation.
