I think the alcohol affects the part of your brain and your inner ear normally helps you to balance. Your brain is desperately trying to work out which way is up. When you lie down your really screwed. I also get tinnitus ( ringing in the ears ). Have had the best roller coaster rides that way.

i think its something to do with the balance mechanism in your inner ear being effected by the alcohol. Or it could be to do with the alcohol effecting your Proprioception.
