I was wondering if there is any scientific proof that after a life time of donating blood, the person would have health problems. Example - My father donated blood for almost thirty years, and now that he is almost 60, he has health problem after health problem. His parents, non blood donors, never had any health problems like my Dad. Any Ideas? Thanks.

For men, donating blood is likely to have a positive health effect over a lifetime. Men tend to have a higher free serum Fe in their bloodstream, which can lead to higher incidence of heart problems.

Women, because of blood loss during menses (her period) tend to have a much lower free serum Fe, so get no benefit.

Other than this, there is no long term problems with blood donation. Short term, you will tend to be tired for about a day, unable to exert to the level you normally would.

donating blood is actually healthy of males because they don't cycle blood out every month like females do.

it is possible that this could be a result, years ago things were not as safe as they are now.. for instence you could go see the doctor for a checkup and he would be smoking a cigarette in your face.. things were just different, AIDS didn't exist, people thought they were safer than they really were etc.
