I had mine and I payed extra to go under, it was worth it because it was an awesome feeling. With the shots you will feel absolutely no pain while it is happening. The worst part is the next few days afterward and then you've probably got a good week before it starts to get back to normal. The biggest thing that will cause pain is whether or not your wisdom teeth's roots are curved(I'm not sure what it's called). If they are curved then it is not a procedure that's as easy as pulling it out but rather the dentist has to get into the root and break them and dig them out. I'm sorry to be graphic, but remember, you won't feel it while it's happening. I had one of four with curved roots and that part of my face was swollen for days and it hurt for a little while longer. For a day or two you will have bad pain but you will also have pain killers and if you think you need something stronger don't be afraid to ask the doc for something stronger. I waited tables at the time and was back to work after a day of rest. Final synopsis, the pain is manageable with the pain killers for the forst few days and after that it is just annoying. Getting used to four holes in your mouth is wierd and not being able to eat anything solid for a few days sucks. One tip, Ensure and Slim Fast are great to get your nutrients while your unable to eat much but stay away from them for the first day. Them mixed with all the blood I swallowed made me throw up a few times and that sucked. Stick to gatorade and juices and stuff for the first day. sorry to be so graphic but I just wanted to warn you. Good luck and don't be afraid it's not that bad.

Ok here's a story - our dental surgeon - fantastic reputation - believes in preventative thearpy. When my boys were early teen (just a few years ago) he did a full panaramic x-ray of their jaw. One son had 3 wisdom teen the other had 4.
He could see by how they were situated in their mouths that there was no way that if they erupted there would be room without disrupting the placement of their permanent teeth. So we decided to have the wisdom teeth taken out before they came in.
Both boys done at one time - appointment made - one guy was 15 - one 17.
It was suggested the appointment made for a Friday morning. The boys had what is known at laughing gas and freezing - I'm telling you they didn't feel a thing and were *happy* all the way thru it :-) This surgeon is so good - he had both boys done and back in the waiting room in and hour.
The came home with Tylenol 3's - which yes they used.
They were tender and ate lightly that weekend but were back to school on Monday.
The oldest boy did develop a small infection at one surgical spot but that was quickly cleared up but that was the only problem.
Good luck with your procedure - ask questions before you have it done (maybe its too late now - but maybe you should have asked if they had nitrous oxide?)

I had a tooth cut out of my head once, also had two pulled the old fashioned way. I've NEVER heard of someone getting a wisdom tooth removed without being knocked out. I highly recommend that though. The shots themselves hurt, and the pulling probably will, and there is some pain afterwards.

more than getting a tattoo less than watching a Twilight Movie. What scared me is the doctor asked if I really wanted Novocaine or anything because a marine had been in earlier in the day and said he liked the pain. To this day I am not sure he if was kidding. My kid had his out recently he seemed to have a faster recovery than I did back in the 80s when I had mine pulled. For me after the first day Advil seemed more effective than the stronger painkiller I got for it likely because of the reduction of swelling. So yes it hurts but it is not the worst thing in the world at least not with Novocaine and it did seem much better than 20 years ago

I would first take some pain relievers prior to your appointment as a pre rec. you need to ask if you can have Nitrous, the laughing gas. this will help ease the tension and discomfort. i assure you that with proper dosages of anesthetic you wont feel a thing. make sure to let your surgeon know if you are having any discomfort during the procedure but I'm sure you will be just fine, it only take about 20 - 30 minutes. then you get to go home and relax. follow all of the assistants instructions and don't use ANY straws, take it easy and utilize the great drugs they give you!

I am assuming if you are having all four extracted they are either impacted or at least partially impacted. Expect some swelling and discomfort for a few days accompanied by a soft diet. If the dentist or oral surgeon suspects you might need some sort of pain medications to help, I am sure they will prescribe them. Try to stay as inactive as possible and rent a bunch of movies.

Mine were impacted. I was in pain for two weeks. It was awful and I would never do it again. Everyone told me it was no big deal. I guess I had an extreme case!
*edit- make sure you take your pain meds as you are supposed to - every 4 or 6 hours or whatever. I tried to NOT take them...and then when I finally did they didn't work as well. That's a mistake I won't make again.

Hey there. Try not to worry. Those shots, if done correctly, block out all of the pain. They did for me. I even had an impacted one that took several minutes to get out and all I felt was the pressure. No pain at all.
When the stuff wears off later it may hurt some, but not much if you're prepared with painkillers ready to go!

I had two wisdom teeth taken out, but it was one at a time. There was not much pain involved. I do know several people who had all 4 taken out at one time and they had a lot of pain, not immediately after removal but after the novacane wears off. Of course they were given medication for the pain, but I know one young lady who was out of work for a week because of it. You're brave to do it this way. I don't understand why people want all 4 out at one time, but the best to you.
