Ok... I come from a country without milice since 1948 and is in the middle of Central America (yep... went through the 80´s without any armed forces... guess what country that is!). So a country has done it... has proved it is possible, and that military forces may be, useless... especially for poor countries which should be investing in education, health systems, etc., instead of weapons (which MIGHT be used in the EVENTUALITY of an invasion).
In fact, most military forces in poor countries had been used against their own people than to fight others... SO, why do not poor countries get rid of their military forces? Don´t tell it is impossible... Panamá, Costa Rica and even Haiti have done it.

In a nutshell, a military is the best deterrent to those wishing to do a country harm, both externally and internally. The civilian population and their way of life collectively deserve to be protected so that it may perpetuate itself. Countries with weak militaries are prime targets for insurgencies, hostilities, civil unrest, political disolution, and other illegal actions.

It would have to be many countries signing treaties and doing it together. Many of the poorer countries base their entire governments off the power of the military, Throughout the 1950's we all saw what the Banana republics did with them. Corruption i guess would be the biggest oponent of a stand down in military force.

I don't disagree with you. However, look what is going on throughout Africa. It's a freakin mess and would be much more unstable without organized militaries. Count yourself lucky if you feel that way, but what works for you will not work for all.
