FOB = Free on board

Free On Board (FOB) is an Incoterm -- also commonly but INCORRECTLY referred to as "Freight on Board". It means that the seller pays for transportation of the goods to the port of shipment, plus loading costs. The buyer pays freight, insurance, unloading costs and transportation from the port of destination to the factory. The passing of risks occurs when the goods pass the ship's rail at the port of shipment. Internationally the term specifies the port of loading, e.g. "FOB New York" or "FOB Vancouver".

It is usually found on invoiced and means Freight on Board. I do not recall if it means that the vendor pays for the shipping or the customer.

Freight on buyer

freight on board, its about who pays for shipping. If a price is FOB shipper's dock, then the title passes when it leaves the shipper's dock and the buyer pays freight. If it is FOB destination, title changes when it reaches the buyer's dock, and the shipper pays the freight.

Hummm now you asked what does the *word* fob mean - not what do the letters FOB stand for. I see everyone ahead of me (well as of when I started to write this) were giving you the meaning of the letters - so I will give you the meaning of the word.

Fob

1......A small pocket at the front waistline of a man's trousers or in the front of a vest, used especially to hold a watch.

2.....A short chain or ribbon attached to a pocket watch and worn hanging in front of the vest or waist.
.......An ornament or seal attached to such a chain or ribbon.
