They can be enormous. The standard for a male is up to 150 pounds - which means that 175 would not be unheard of in a non-standard dog.

Yes, they can be good with children, but their size is not a good match for younger children.

If you are considering getting one, you need to visit the newfoundland club of america's webpage: http://www.ncanewfs.org/newfs.shtml to learn more about them. This way you'll be getting information directly from the source - not from a 13 year old whose grandmother had one or from a BackYard Breeder who is trying to sell you one.

Be sure to learn how to spot a good breeder. Large breed dogs are especially prone to genetic problems that BYBs fail to look for. I'll provide you a few links, along with the newfie rescue club, to make your search easier. Good luck to you. : )

Newfoundlands weigh between 110-150, some larger. They are absolutely great with children and are referred to as canine nannys. Their bite potential is low.

The down side to these gentle giants is the incomprehensible shedding and they drool and slobber.

If you play rough with your 45 pound puppy be prepared to pay the price when the adult dog wants to play that game.

I love Newfoundlands but decided on a Bernese Mountain Dog. He is great with the kids but does have some dominating characteristics. We keep working with him and the trainer. He is 3 years old and weighs 102 pounds.

Good luck

Newfies are awesome dogs. I have worked on many during my 27 years as a veterinary technician. The only drawback with larger breeds is that they tend have short life-spans. If you have younger children this could be devastating to them. I see that there are lots of great answers for you here, especially the one about checking out the breed by going to various web sites which is FANTASTIC advice. Best wishes.

We have a lot that come into the vet clinic. Bear, the one we see the most, is about 140 pounds. And the ones i've met are GREAT with kids. I love newfies, they are one of my favorite breeds. But I don't know that i could ever own one because of the HUGE amount of hair, i would not be able to keep up. If you want more information, go to the AKC website, or dogbreedinfo.com. They have all the breed standards and everything.

They a gentle dog as most are. Aggressiveness comes from two reasons; ONE, the owner teach the dog to be aggressive. TWO, the dog aggressive to protect you. Number two can be approached in many ways, we taught out dogs to attack on command and also, to stand down!!!! Example; My friend and me were playing when we were young, my dog NEVER was aggressive toward my friend, but, one day we were playing Sword fight and my friend came at me with his sword. My dog immediately moved between us and he was showing teeth! I just Yelled; "NO"!, and the Dog stood down. Had it been a real attack, I would have commanded; "Get"! With no command the dog would have held his ground for my friend to Back Down or Attack. It real easy. The dog never attacked anyone and just let us know when a stranger was coming. Sorry about the story, just wanted you to understand Dogs. Newfoundland are very good dogs and will protect your children, but, TEACH the dog the Diplomatic way of doing it.

Our smallest male was 130 and our largest was 175. our only female was 140 but she was over weight. they are great with children and are very tolerant when trained right. companion's mom has Newfies, I lived along with her contemporary one for 2 a million/2 years. he's stable black and his call is Kazoo. Her final boy replaced into named Angus. they selection in character, yet frequently are clownish until adults, common and tractable except overly excited, love swimming and walks and often being outdoors. we live in Michigan 30 seconds from the Indiana border or maybe that a ways north the summers are very complicated for him. they're no longer something yet drool and hair, so in case you do no longer suggestions drool on your pants and settee cushions and black Newfie hair on your butter and mashed potatoes, then this canines is super. they're non violent human beings canines and tolerate little ones nicely. Drop-ineffective lovable as puppies, they advance with out postpone to the size of a black bear and choose on consistent training because of the fact they're . . . nicely, no longer probably obdurate, in simple terms companies to reminiscence lapses, i think. Kazoo is saved outdoors different than during the nastiest iciness climate. Newfies often get alongside with different canines and don't have severe prey drives like huskies and different northern breeds can. wish this facilitates you!
