We do not have any artifact, bone or rock that can "positively" be dated beyond about 5500 years. The oldest written records are just over 5000 years old. Genesis, the first book of the Bible, although not a scientific document, was first recorded about 1450 B.C. This book gives genealogies and times that place the creation of the earth at about (approximately) 4112 B.C. If you add that to 2006 (today) you get 6118 years old. This is not scientific, but it is the 'first record' we have.
The earth is supposed to be about 4.5 billion years old according to scientist who believe in evolution. There are many scientist who do not believe this, see www.whoisyourcreator.com for a partial list. How do we get dinosaurs dying out 275 million years ago if we have no records. The answer is, that we don't know that dinosaurs lived that long ago. The age of the dinosaurs and other old past ages are taken from the geologic column. The is geologic column was made up around 1830 by a geologist named Charles Lyell, and some others. At the time they believed that the earth was about 150,000 years old according to the time it took for each geologic layer or strata to lay down. A range of dates were supposed and assigned to each layer. As time went by, the age of the earth grew as new information or evidence was discovered. A fossil was assigned to each layer as a supposed date index. So, when we dig at a site and find a bone-we look for an index fossil and that determines how old the bone is supposed to be. These indices are all speculative. So, how did we get 4.5 billion years? Well, that is how old the earth is "supposed" to be, "If" all these other "speculations" are correct. Some people think that rocks and fossils are dated by some radio-metric method. No, this is not true. Radio-metric dating is used "only" when it agrees with the geologic column. When it agrees, it is called a confirmation. When it does not agree, it is discarded and called faulty data. So, what we have is a geologic column that is pure supposition, and the ages assigned to each period is supposition, and we have no scientific way to check it or verify it. The bottom line is- no one knows how old the earth is.

We have the same evidence as everyone else, but creationists interpret it differently bc we have different assumptions. For example, an evolutionist looks at layers of rock, measures the rate at which one layer is being laid down, and extrapolates back to determine the age of the first layer. So, if one layer is laid down every 10 years, and there's 100 layers, then they'd say it's been there for 1000 years. However, they ASSUME that there were no layers there to begin with, if there were, it would throw off the calculation. They assume that the rate hasn't changed, if it did, it would throw off the calculation, and they assume that no layers have been removed by erosion or some other method. These are unprovable assumptions, and if any one of them is wrong, the age calculated is wrong.
Origins science, science dealing with the past, always has assumptions, both for evolutionists and creationists, the question is, which assumptions are the right ones?
By the way, asking us to not use the Bible is unfair, since the Bible is the foundation of our worldview. You can't stack the deck like that.

the truth is, neither the Creationists nor Evolutionists will ever be able to prove their theories definitely, 100%, without a doubt. No one ever saw God create the world in 6 days him/herself, but no one watched single-celled organisms evolve into complex lifeforms first-hand over billions of years either. Radioactive dating (which its credibility is controversial to begin with) won't give you the exact time the "skeletons" were formed, but we Christians can't tell you that Moses finished writing the book of Genesis on xx/xx/xxxx with 100% certainty. While we have "evidence", neither side will ever be able to give you the "proof" you want.
As for my evidence, I strongly encourage you to at least try to look at the answers in genesis website that someone posted earlier. We all have different views, but at least give the other side a chance to speak.
And why shouldn't Bible be an evidence? After all doesn't the 6,000 years and 6 days come from the Bible itself?

People have been around for 6000 yrs. Genesis 1:2 says the earth was formless. I think the earth is older. I dont know how many years or thousands or millions of years older. There is good scientific evidence www.godandscience.org

of course the earth is older than 6000 years old even the Bible says that because i am a born again Holy Spirit filled Christian but if people would really read in Genesis the Bible says that God created people before Adam and eve and how in the heck did they recover all those dinosaur bones you cant listen to some fanatic Christian with their minds set in stone and you sure cant wrap up almighty God in There own little box In genesis 1 v 26 God said let us make human beings and verse 31 He was pleased and it was completed then the 7th day He rested then in chapter 2 v 7 He created Adam out of dirt and eve out of his rib and there was the garden of Eden so their is proof that there were people before Adam and eve. They see but they don't see someone once said and His name was Jesus

well I don`t believe it is 6000 years old, how can it be?
who thinks it is?
if it is 6000 years old we`re pretty well advanced for a creature. that in turn then asks where did we come from as no creature can advance itself this much in 6000 years. we`d have Worms with nuclear weapons!
guess you got to look at the bible as the first way of bringing people together and amassing them, so they seen that as year dot, as previously everything was not holy and real in there beliefs.
its the goldfish in the bowl type answer from me best I can offer, still would love to know who now thinks planet Earth is of this vintage.

I see a few answers that say that people have been around for 6000 years. Nonsense!
There are entire skeletons of people that have been found that are older than that. The Chinese civilization dates back between 8,000-10,000 years, which by itself disproves the 6000 year biblical evidence.
Why don't we all just start using Lord Of The Rings for our evidence, it is just as valid as the bible.

What do you mean, "The bible is not scientific proof"? Why not? Millions of events in the Bible are historically accurate- very accurate! Just check out the Answers In Genesis website. It may be a Christian site, but it also presents lots of OBJECTIVE and verifyable scientific data supporting the Bible. Further proof is the many books of the Bible that were taken out because there was no first-hand accounts- that means what IS in there is very true!!!Sorry, but I just get really passionate about this...

Sorry, I don't have any proof for you. What people consider as proof is subjective. A solipsist doesn't see proof of anything except themselves, based on "Cogito, ergo sum" or "I think, therefore I am." You couldn't prove to a solipsist that Earth is older than 6000 years.
I have faith that it IS older than 6000 years, so I agree with you, but I don't have proof. Scientists have "proof," but proof is also based on laws that are made up by other scientists, just as the bible is.
Who is to say that you or I didn't just pop into existence at this very moment, complete with a package of memories and history? It's quite possible, according to the second law of thermodynamics. It's amazing that there is any organization to the universe at all, let alone intelligent life.
