When a recipe calls for a certain amount of an item chopped,?

does that mean the measurement before or after the item is chopped?I've always assumed it meant after, but I was debating this with someone and realized I really didn't know for sure :)

It may depend on how it's worded.

If it says, "1 cup dried cherries, chopped", then it means before.

If it says, "1 cup chopped dried cherries", then it means after.
