Consult an oral surgeon, or at least a dentist/orthodontist.
I had TMJ surgery to realign my jaws and stop the popping and locking.
You don't say how old you are, but this is what I went through half way through my orthodontia.
Good luck!

You probably have what's called a "malocclusion," which in everyday language means "bad bite." the teeth have come in crooked.

There are two positions your jaw can be in and you have cleverly already identified them. There is the "comfortable for the jaw muscles" position (where the teeth are not locking together correctly) and the "teeth fitting together" position. (which is uncomfortable for the jaw.)

Here's the skinny - the teeth tend to win. When you walk around (or even when you sleep) the teeth interdigitate (fit together like a zipper) and they cruelly FORCE the jaw ligaments and muscles to go somewhere they don't want to go. This stretches the muscles and ligaments of the TMJ (joint) and causes the click (aka, TMD; the D is for disease of disorder.)

There are two ways to fix this. The cheap way is to have the dentist fabricate an appliance that you wear at night, at home, when not in public, usually) that keeps your teeth from coming all the way together. This lets your jaw relax and not go into the clicky position.

The other option is braces and/or surgery. You may need to move the teeth and/or the jaw bones. This involves an orthodontist and a oral surgeon respectively, and even with insurance will probably cost a few thousand dollars.

Let me know if you have any other questions, but you probalby have to be seen in person!!

I would suggest you go see a orthodontist. Your age makes a big difference, if this could be fixed with just braces. While you are still growing is the time to see your dentist, the earlier the better. It is a lot easier to fix this kind of problem with just braces while your jaw is still growing. Once you are 18 and you are not growing much any more , it is harder tt fix. Usually, when you have an over bite is when you would use a head gear, but even if you have to wear one, so what, you will be happy with the outcome.

Your top and bottom teeth do not line up properly. This is called a cross bite. You are moving your jaw to one side to line up the teeth. This will wear down some teeth, and this is what is causing the head aches. You have to see an orthodontist for appliances to fix your jaw.
