I know the French left after Diem Bein Fu (I know I'm not spelling that right) defeat and we had advisors in there before that, but what was the actual "tag team- you're it" process?

WE HAD A TREATY WITH THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE GOVERNMENT TO DEFEND THEM....THERE WAS SOME INSURRECTION IN THE SOUTH BY NATIVES....THE PROBLEM WAS IT WAS BEING FUNDED BY ANOTHER COUNTRY-NORTH VIETNAM. THE COUNTRY ITSELF WAS PARTITIONED BY THE GENEVA CONVENTION. THE U.S. WAS OBLIGATED BY THE TREATY TO DEFEND ITS ALLY-SOUTH VIETNAM-IF ATTACKED. THE NEWS MEDIA JUST COULDN'T QUITE GET THEIR HANDS ON PROOF THAT THE NORTH VIETNAMESE WERE IN SOUTH VIETNAM DURING MOST OF THE CONFLICT--THE GUYS ON THE GROUND THAT DID THE FIGHTIN AND DYIN HAD PLENTY OF EVIDENCE BUT THE MEDIA DIDNT WANT TO HEAR IT....KINDA SCREWED UP THEIR IDEAS ABOUT WHETHER OR NOT WE SHOULD BE THERE. THATS WHERE THEY LOST A LOT OF CREDIBILITY AND REALLY HAVENT REGAINED IT SINCE. THERE IS SOMETHING ABOUT SOMEONE SAYING THAT THE U.S IS ALWAYS THE PROBLEM THAT DOES NOT SIT WELL WITH MOST FOLKS. BUT THERE WILL ALWAYS BE THOSE WHO WANT TO WRITE FICTION---THEIR CALLED NEWSMEN. THEIR AGENDA WILL ALWAYS TAKE PRECEDENCE OVER THE TRUTH. AND THEY ANSWER TO NO ONE....ALWAYS A SCARY THOUGHT.

It wasn't a tag team process. The US was providing some air support and logistics to the French, but the Tonkin Bay incident actually put US boots on the ground.

Before then the US was quite ambivalent about the Viet Minh - Ho Chi Minh had even received military assistance from the US during WW2. When the Viet Minh got too close to the USSR the US snubbed them, and began to help the French and the South Vietnamese.

Dien Bien Phu is what you mean.
