Totally hyped up by the media.

South central LA (south of downtown, by USC) is considered a ghetto/watts/compton/inglewood.

But man, LAX and all the hotels are in inglewood, so why is that part of the "ghetto." And its 2 miles from the ocean, pffffsst!

Compton, CA is a ghetto - lots of gang shootings.
Downtown LA after 5pm is a tent city - all the homeless put up tents on the sidewalk and the street smells like the bathroom.

I don't know about now but at one time the closest thing to a ghetto in L.A. would have been what was referred-to as 'Ees-ellay'., which might have been Boyle Heights.
However; No place in Los Angeles could have compared to the real ghettos of Europe. Okay, maybe The Big Apple - New York did, back a few decades.

Mostly everyone here says Compton, Watts and Inglewood. but that's a lie...I've lived in Watts and been to these places before. you can walk outside around 11:00 pm and won't get jumped. Some of the answers below are arrogant but whatever heres a real answer

I think of the horrible traffic first, because that is what I've experienced the most in LA. Then 2nd I think of all the cool houses in the Hollywood hills because I've seen them on TV.
