Horizontal or vertical.. Horizontal will make the room look wider but the ceiling lower. Vertical will draw the eye up and make the ceiling look higher.

You need to get a plumb on a string. It's a string with chalk which will allow you to snap it against the wall to make straight lines. Then you can place masking or painting tape along those lines and paint inside them. Paint your wall with the white you like and then all you'll need to do is paint black lines.

There are a few other things you can do, especially if you're not really into painting and don't do it often.

Use different widths of tape. If you screw it up, it won't show as much. Make the spaces different sizes too.

You can also paint the room one color and then just paint over the same paint in lines with a shiny or satin varnish (I prefer satin). This will make your wall look two-tone. You can check out ideas at Benjamin Moore's website. Enjoy!

Easy...

First paint the whole wall white... becasue it is easier to paint black on top of white.

Second get a ruler, level and a chalk snap... measure out the area between each black line at one end... vertical the top or bottom... horizontal the right or left. Get one more person... hold one side of chalk line and another to hold the other end. One of you use the level... when it is straight snap.

Third, mask the area you want black with painters tape... normal a blue in color tape. Tape off the side the you want to keep white... so the area should be tape inside on one and outside on the next to paint the middle black.

Fourth remove tape slowly.

Now vertical are easier to stripe... horizontal you have to try a match up a strip around the room may end up slightly off. If it is just one wall... then either way will be about the same amount of work.

All sound advice. Use caution with the painters tape. The paint will almost always seep under the tape and leave a jagged edge. The best way to do it is to make lines (plumb or level) with a pencil and cut in the black on the lines(paint black over white). Use a steady hand and go slow.

DEFINATELY VERTICLE- IT MAKE YOUR CEILING LOOK HIGHER- USE PAINTERS TAPE AND PLACE STRIPS EQUALLY APART IN DISTANCE TO MAKE SURE YOUR LINES ARE STREIGHT. (I WOULDNT EVEN WORRY ABOUT TRYING TO PAINT WHERE YOU HAD THE TAPE - IT WILL JUST LOOK LIKE ANOTHER STRIPE - AND IT GETS A LITTLE TECHNICAL TRYING TO FIX IT ANYWAY - ESPECIALLY IF YOURE NEW TO PAINTING) - HAVE FUN!

Hire a painter. With no experience, you will likely not be happy with the results.
