I have a beautifully 1999 Dakota P U and loves it,5 speed standard ,3.9L ,6ft.box .some small extras.Had front end usual problems for that year, the newer after market parts took care of that after warranty ran out.Manuel transmission gives more gas mil age and more power.Handles a slide in camper full of junk for hunting etc.,and trailer in tow with 2 quads on plus.I will get another if I can afford it when I'm ready.Edit--I think consumer reports are OK if U can afford to be told what to buy, from those who have nothing else to do only yap about tecinital crap and get paid for it.

I have a 2000 Dakota Sport (maxed out) which I ordered from the factory with 5 speed over drive. No major problems only a minor which the dealership was able to fix in no time at all. 17.5 back and forth to work 23.5 miles open road. I use mid grade gas not 87 because my Magnum had slight gas ping (thanks to the 15% what ever they put in), and I get better performance.
There have been some recalls of the transmission in 1999 but they have resolved it.
I've been a " Bow Tie Guy " most of my driving life, but a freind turned me on to Dodge, and now in a few months get a 1500 Dodge Sport with the new Hemi. But I'm still keeping my Dakota.
All the best.

I have a 2000 Dakota and the truck only had one problem with it. It was minor and was taken care of while the truck was still under warranty.
You need to look at the recall information to get a handle on this. There were 2000 Dodge Dakotas that had recall notices, but not the kind that I have. You should check this website before buying ANY vehicle.

well like dodge man said, depends how it was taken care of by the previous owner,if it was abused,it doesnt matter what make it is.my dakota ( 95 ) all ive had to do is replace the radiator core, and a cpl hoses, after all, they were 11 years old.it will still cruise at 100 on the highway no sweat.if your looking for a truck that you can work, its the dakota, the ford an chevy both have small beds because theyre compacts,an not meant to work, the dakota is a midsize, with 42" between the wheel wells, versus 38 on ranger/s-10.and if ya notice,42" is the width of most pallets.hint hint

It depends on the price difference, how many miles the used transmission has, etc. We'd need more detail to give a good answer. However, you may want to look into getting a rebuilt transmission, it costs less than a new transmission and will last longer than a (non-rebuilt) used transmission. In fact, when I replaced my transmission last year it cost about the same as a used.

I've seen too many posts about Dakota's, most of them are bad. Try a search in Yahho answers for "dodge dakota" and you'll see what I'm talking about :o)

They are nice looking trucks but very problematic (search consumer reports or edmunds.com). Get a Ford or Chevy instead.
