It's the .1 in 5.1 surround sound. It's the big speaker that creates very low tones. That is the sounds you fell more then you hear.

A subwoofer is a type of loudspeaker dedicated to the reproduction of bass frequencies, typically from about 20 Hz to about 200 Hz in cone speakers, and in the case of a rotary woofer, from 20Hz down to DC. It is difficult for small loudspeakers to reproduce frequencies below 40 Hz, especially above 100 dB, and so it is often advantageous to use a loudspeaker intended specifically for this task.

A speaker that reproduces the lower end of the audio spectrum. A subwoofer system may include a crossover circuit which switches frequencies at approximately 100Hz and under to the subwoofer, while passing the rest of the signal to the main speakers. Unlike front, center and surround channels, where speaker placement is critical to the listener, subwoofers are non-directional and can be located anywhere in the room.

a subwoofer is a speaker that is designed to handle the low frequency sounds (BASS)

they can be powered (with amplifier included)
or just speaker alone
