Express codes for quickly entering products that are not barcoded - like in-store bread, or cakes in loose bags.
e.g. 45 = chocolate doughnuts.
They have quick photo ID charts of them on bits of string at tills too.

Its a bit like the quick dial codes you get on phones for your most frequently used numbers.

Well, thats what goes on in MY shop.

ON THE OTHER HAND

Code 2 might mean "shiplifter sighted" in action.
Code 3 might mean "fit bird sighted"
Code 4 might mean "the manager is a d*ckhead"
Code 1 might mean "I need a pee. Fetch a bucket"

Different stores have different codes.

Without more info, your question cannot be answered fully.

Some codes refer to items that are generic such as newspapers, sandwiches as opposed to specific newspapers or particular sandwich fillings.

Some codes refer to items that are seasonal such as Easter eggs or Christmas crackers. They're not sold all year round so they are given 'temporary' codes.

Some codes refer to an item for which the original code cannot be used or where the original code clashes with another item.

Codes can be used to help with data capture. Data capture is a means of stock control. If you know what you are selling, you can order more or less depending on the demand.

After working in shops for years, the codes will mainly mean "shoplifters" or "find the store detective quick" there's a shop lifter.
