OK, I'm in CA, so I can help you with this! (Trust me, I've got the scoop on all the programs in this state!)
The first thing your wife needs to do is walk into a Planned Parenthood clinc (or other women's health clinic) and tell them she thinks she's pregnant. When the test comes back positive, they'll sign her up for presumtive eligibility Medi-Cal on the spot, and get her the stuff she needs to enrole in full Medi-Cal. They may even have someone there to get her into the program (rather than having to go to the county Welfare office). Again, a clinic will help you with this. A doctor's office may not. But just because you get signed up at a clinic, doesn't mean you can't go to a doc (as long as they take Medi-Cal. Call and ask) for your pre-natal care.
Once you've got that proof of pregnancy from the clinic, call your local WIC office and make an appointment. (With that income, you qualify, and who couldn't use free food, right?)
If you don't qualify for Medi-Cal, try AIM. (I've included the link.)
Remember when applying for any of these programs, you're a family of THREE now. (The baby counts!)
I really think you should qualify for Medi-Cal... Well, think SHE qualifies. (YOU probably won't have coverage.) I've been making fairly decent wages and qualified before.
I had Medi-cal with my first son, and insurance through my husband's employer for this one... and this one is costing us a lot more! lol

RE :Wife is pregnant and we have no insurance?
Hi everyone.
Just found out last night that the wife's 7 weeks pregnant (yay!) but we don't have health insurance (boo!).
I live in California and was told there is something called Medi-Cal (?) that helps people who are low-income and don't have health insurance in their pregnancy needs but I don't know if I qualify. My gross monthly income is $3000.
Also, if I don't qualify I heard there is a low cost insurance called AIM? Anybody who's ever had dealings with Medi-cal or AIM your pointers and experience will be muchly appreciated!!
Thanks! Excited but scared of becoming a daddy!! AHHHH!!!

Go to your local food stamp office and apply for a medical card. You should be able to get a card for your wife, she will have to have proof shes pregnant like a paper from the health dept. If you dont qualify take in a few pay check stubs that have less money on them. Its cheating but the state shouldnt make insurance so high.

Im on Medical but when my fiancee and I get married in Feb we will no longer qualify and will have to get our own insurance for me and my kids. Unless you have a huge immediate family making $3000 a month you wont qualify either. My firends arent married but they live together and have a 17month old son. Medical just notified them that the father makes too much money and dropped the son from the program they too have to find a low cost insurance. Try AIM instead. Thanks for mentioning that, Im gonna look it that too.
For the people dont know: Medical is California's version of medicaid.
Ok i just looked into it and being pregnant is an eligibility requirement so she may qualify here is the site:
http://www.dhs.ca.gov/mcs/medi-calhome/FAQs2.htm#Who%20Can%20Get%20Medi-Cal?
Go to your local Department of Human Services (DHS) office and they can help you.

Congrats! first off. But I think what your meaning is MEDICAID?? That's what I was on with my past son. It covered everything. I didn't have to pay a dime. Im not too sure what the income restrictions are in California. You might want to get on the Internet and look around. Or even better yet, I know that if you look in the phone book under Government assisting, you can find out there. Does your wife work? If so, that doesn't really look good. You want to look really poor to these people. Because they will ask if you own anything and how much you make. They can be really strict about getting qualified. Well good Luck with everything!!

Sorry to tell you but for a family of 2 3000 is too much...but there is a program called health families that is low cost health insurance funded by the state. Check the website. You will be able to see if your income level qualifies. You must be prepared to send them proof of what your income is to prove you qualify. If this is your first child you may also have to submit proof of pregnancy.

See if you can find work in Canada. They like children, and will see that your wife is taken care of. You're obviously thrilled about being a daddy. That's a sure indication of a debilitating psychosis. Try that avenue with the state. You've convinced me with just a few paragraphs and I'm considered a pessimist. I think you have a very good chance at getting on the dole.

I am not sure if you would qualify for Medical you may make too much. I would check out other programs in your area, and check into AIM and see what they can help you with. Congratulations on your new little one-having children is a wonderful experience!! Don't be nervous you will do just fine.
