I know exactly how you feel, because I am the same. I can't sleep for a week before. I don't think you can actually ever get over the fear, but there are things you can do. I have a dentist that uses a gas, sort of like a laughing gas. It's called R.A. and I think it is short for Relative Analgesia. You are totally awake the whole time, but you feel really relaxed and h a p p y . I had a nerve taken out of my front tooth, the dentist said it was going to take about 50 minutes. Ooooooh Shock Horror. Sick in the gut feeling and all of that. He gave me the R.A. I felt all swooshy and the next thing I knew he was telling me that he had finished. I couldn't believe it. I thought that I had only been in the chair for seconds. I now have this R.A. even for a check up and scale and polish because I hate that as well. The R.A. gives you such a relaxed feeling that I no longer fear the dentist. You are awake the whole time, but like in a dreamy state. You don't feel sick and you can drive straight afterwards. It's magic. I'm sure if you can find a dentist that uses R.A your fear will be a lot less. Good luck for Monday.

It sounds like a real fear to me. If one drilled too deep, that would scare anyone out of going. Not sure what to tell you but sometimes it helps to tell the dentist why you're afraid. If he acts like that was a horrible thing to happen to you and he was a much better dentist than that then it should make you feel a little better. If he acts like it should be no big deal and you shouldn't be afraid anyway, run! You need to remember that no matter what, you are in control. Its your teeth, not his, and if you feel too uncomfortable you don't have to stay. I hope this helps you. :))

True Story at the Dentist
Olive, from County Westmeath, Ireland, arrives in England to live with her daughter and son in law. She is moving because of her poor health and brings with her most of her treasured possessions. These include a small piece of tissue paper in which she has secreted what appear to be five teeth which have broken off her denture.
Having settled in she asks Thomas, 'Do you know where I can get my dentures mended?' Of course, 'replies Thomas, 'If you give them to me I'll take them to a dental technician.'
Olive duly hands over the rather tired piece of paper which contains some very grubby looking teeth.
He drives to Waterlooville to the dental laboratory.'How long will it take?' Thomas asks the technician.
'Oh, about an hour, 'smiles the dental expert.' Then I'll wait in the car, 'says Thomas, 'and read my newspaper.'
An hour passes and the technician appears at the car window holding a plastic bag and the piece of tissue paper.' That' ll be £80, 'requests the specialist, 'but I could only fit four of the teeth to the denture. I'm sorry.'
'That's a pity, 'comments Thomas, 'what happened to the fifth one?'
'I have it here in the tissue, 'answers the techie, showing it to Thomas.
'The thing is, he said, 'it's easy to fit the teeth but nigh on impossible to fit this peanut.'

My dentist calls in 2 Valiums for me and I pick them up and take them before a visit. By the time I get there I'm all "Ladida"

I like the dentist. I would rather see him than the doc anyday.
Tell yourself that it will only take 5mins and it won't hurt. Talk to your dentist, get him to explain what he is doing, if you understand this, then you may not get so scared.
Don't not go, dentists are rarer than gold, so if you have one, keep him.

Dentists are actually able to prescribe sedatives, my ex's dentist did this for her and after a few visits she was over her fear.
Would suggest speaking to your dentist or doctor if you decide to try this
