I got a puppy last week and I took her to the vet 2 days ago. She got her vaccinations, was put on a dewormer, given Advantage flea preventer and took a heartworm medication. She woke up this morning with really bad breath and it's been persistent all day. Could the dewormer be causing this or something else?

You don't say how old she is, but the most obvious answer is that she's teething. Puppies who are teething can have terrible breath for a few days. Don't worry, it goes away. If she's under 4 months, there's most likely another cause for it though and she'll need to get checked out.

It's more likely something she ate like feces, the diet she's now on or something of that nature. Or it could just be puppy breath and you never really noticed it. It's not likely caused by the medications given at your vet. I've never had anybody complain about bad breath after the exact same regimen you described and I've done it many times.

Bad breath, medically termed 'halitosis,' is a common problem reported by pet owners. The most common cause of halitosis is some sort of dental problem. Bacteria, saliva, and food particles can form plaque, which causes bad breath. This can further develop into gingivitis, or worse, periodontal disease, which will make the breath even more unpleasant.

In addition to dental problems, other causes of bad breath include:

* Diabetes mellitus
* Kidney disease
* Gastrointestinal disease, including cancers, obstructions, and certain infections
* Infections of areas around the mouth, such as the folds of the lips
* Respiratory disease, e.g.; some sinus infections
* Dietary "indiscretions," such as eating stool or spoiled garbage
* Other oral disease, such as tonsillitis, cancer, trauma, and some autoimmune diseases

Any pet with bad breath should be examined by a veterinarian, unless you know it is caused by something the pet ate. Some causes of bad breath can cause severe and even fatal complications, if not treated promptly.

I have found something strange, and wondered if other have found the same.....after a dog has Advantage applied, it smells "funny" for a few days. The breath is weird smelling, and when you are around the dog, it just smells "strange". It was really bad when I had a GSD living with me!! He smelled very strongly of this smell after his Advantage. I have Newfies and notice it evry 6 weeks when I apply it!!!!!

One obvious answer everyone seems to be missing is that it's a puppy, it's most likely simply teething. Bad breath... VERY bad breath often happens when puppies and kittens have teeth coming in, it typically goes away in a few days to a week.

check her teeth, she could have a cavity, plaque, or an abscess. this happens with horses a lot, so talk to your vet or a canine dentist

It might be the medicine. I have never experienced that. I do know that certain puppy food though can make their breath smell.
