It would be much better to take your dog to the vet. If it IS something serious, they are much more likely to be able to do something about it now than later when your dog is sick from it. If it is a cancerous lump (not likely but possible), they can remove it and send it to the pathologist and find out what exactly it is. If you wait and it is cancerous, by the time anything is done about it, the cancer may have spread to other parts of the body like the lymph nodes or lungs in which cases there isn't much they can do for her then. It is more likely a fatty tumor (a lipoma) which are benign, or a cyst (not serious but can be annoying for the dog and can also become infected in some cases) or an abscess. There are other possibilities but those would be the first things I think of. Your vet is really your best source of info and it's ALWAYS a good idea to have a vet check her out.

First of all, your dog won't HAVE to be put down. You're the only one who can make that decision for your dog, anyway... it's entirely up to you.

Secondly, the worst thing it could be is a malignant tumor. If you don't wait too long, you can probably have it removed with little chance that it's spread. The longer you wait, the worse it will get. Have it removed, and your dog will have stitches/staples for a week or so, and if you're lucky, that'll be the end of it.

My dog just had a cancerous tumor removed from the same spot about two weeks ago, and he's perfectly fine now. Just got his staples out, and he's napping beside right now.

HOWEVER... the fact that it's disappearing and reappearing is a pretty good inclination that it isn't cancerous. Cancer typically grows, and just keeps on growing. It doesn't go away and come back.

There are a lot of things it could be... a cyst or a swollen lymph node, perhaps. None of which are serious.

Just go get it checked out and get her on the road to recovery.

I'm definite you will have your own guesses. There are various things it would be equivalent to a cyst or abcess, lump or melanoma. Just try to keep in mind when it regarded, if he has been performing bizarre or favoring the leg in any respect so which you could tell the vet, i'm sure you knew this however hi there you asked. Excellent good fortune with at the vets.

My dog had a lump that was filled with pus, like a spot or a boil. My vet said that this sometmes happens, and is more common in dogs on steriods, as mine is. I did not like it on him though, and kept fiddling with it until it burst! Yuck.
Very unlikely she will be put down, might be an idea to get pet insurance as then you can be at the vet for the slightest thing, like we are! Also, you could ask for an appt with the Vet Nurse as will be cheap and they can advise you.
Good luck to you and the doggy!

you may be hurting her more by not taking her to the vet, how would you feel if you took her to the vet in a few weeks and they say, "if you had brought her in earlier we could have helped her"..... what will be will be, and you have to take her to the vet if you love her.....

it will probably be nothing, could be a a fatty lump... you have to take her though.

fingers crossed for you x x x

It could be a cyst or a tumor or depending on the animal and its past it could be swelling of the muscle or joints but i think the best way to find out before you regret it is take the dog to a vet....
