Absolutely. The problem most likely lies in the ways you communicate. Perhaps you say the same thing, but your dog interprets it differently because your tone, inflection and body language differ and are giving him different signals. Also, consider that dogs may see their human families as part of their pack so they associate levels of dominance within their family group. He may see you as the pack leader and your wife as beneath him or his equal, which means he doesn't have to do what she says. She needs to work on training him as well, and practice the No Free Lunch or Nothing In Life Is Free method. Everytime the dog wants something (food, attention, to go outside, petting, a walk, a toy, etc) he must obey a command from your wife. If he doesn't, he doesn't get what he wants, he gets ignored. It can be as simple as SIT or DOWN but he must do it EVERY time until he learns that she calls the shots, not him.

Be sure that you and your wife are doing the same things when you ask your dog to do something. There is nothing mystical or mysterious about this - it's only about consistency in training. Use rewards, use the same words for what you want your dog to do - for example, you both should be saying "Down" and not sometimes using "Lie down" or "Get down" etc. Hand gestures are more effective than words, too - as long as you are both using the same ones! Just as with potty training and teaching bite inhibition, all involved people need to be on the same page. Good luck!

Your wife needs to learn to be more dominant around the dog or else she will have problems as the dog gets older. Try getting her to feed the dog but withhold the food until it sits for her. The alpha female always eats first and the rest of the pack dont eat until she says so.

In a wild dog pack a dog only has one leader which is called the alpha dog. Domestic dogs generally tend to retain that part of their instinct and usually see ONE person in the household as the alpha dog and the others as "members of the pack". The dog can usually be trained to obey others but will generally have more respect for whomever they consider alpha.

My aunt has a Doberman/Lab mix who considered me the alpha dog. She ALWAYS listened to me and I could do whatever to her without her biting me (for example trimming her nails). But if my aunt tried the dog WOULD NOT cooperate and snarl or growl at her.

make sure you and your wife are talking and doing everything the same. if the puppy responds to your signals then make sure your wife is doing it the same way. make sure she is using the same hand and is she saying "sit" while using the signal if you are, or is she doing it different. the puppy just might be confused. most dogs will listen to anyone that does it right. my uncle showed me how to make his dogs sit when i was little because I thought it was neat and I did the signal close, but not right and the dog didnt sit, when he showed me again the correct way I got the dog to sit.

yes the puppy is allowed to obey any amount of masters. my sister's pit listens to the rest of the family. it all depends on how u go about trying to get him to listen or how the wife behaves to the dog

are you the first person he or she saw. and were you the first to give him his first command. there could be several reasons to that question. but some pups are just one dog person. they also like to choose thier owners ehen given the chance. but dont give up you have to keep on trying and working with the pup.
remember you 2 or the owners. dont let the pup win or you are in for some really big trouble. pup or not they are smarter at that age than you really know.
