I am a police officer and am adamantly AGAINST gun control. I could go on forever, but here are my top three reasons:

1. Constitution protects the people's right to keep and bear arms
2. According to the FBI, 97% of all guns used against police officers were obtained illegally. I will go out on a limb and guess that the percentage of guns used in other crimes would be slightly lower, but still close to the above figure. Assuming this is correct, why should the government interfere with a law abiding citizen's rights (see number 1). Gun control laws DO NOT WORK. They only infringe on law abiding citizen's rights.
3. In the rural areas of my state, a 30-45 minute response time by the police is quick, even for crime in progress type calls. That's a long time to be waiting for help. There are many areas that don't even have a police officer on duty at certain times of the day.

Yes, people should be allowed to own hand guns. They should be allowed to protect themselves as we don't each have a personal policeman to assure our safety in case someone breaks into our homes and assaults us. We should also be allowed to use guns recreationally, for target shooting and for hunting.

I own handguns and rifles. Never shot anyone, never want to be put into a self-defense situation either. But if somone tries to attack me and do me bodily harm or take my life then when all is said and done I will use whatever I have at hand with a clear conscience to protect myself, and the bigger the better. If it means I end up shooting someone who's trying to maim or kill me, oh well. I feel no responsibility whatsoever to provide for the on-the-job safety of felons.

Self defense is a good reason for starters. The founding fathers gave a right to the people that we can have them to protect us from harm. You have to believe that after 911 there are going to be more attacks right here, it's only a matter of time and i want something to protect me and my family as best i can and i have some that are just for that reason as well as the crooks right here i mean who's going to protect you Ted Kennedy ? Nancy Pelosi ? either Clinton ? i could go on with the list they will leave you out there hanging in the wind with your pants down, You don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure this out. I will not just lie down and die, i will take some of them with me and laugh.

There is an old saying "If you outlaw guns only outlaws will have guns I believe in the homespun truth of that statement the fact is that the "gun crimes" you hear about aren't committed by the people whom have a license to carry they are committed (for the most part) by the element of our society who does not believe the laws the rest of us live by apply to them.

Sure, the police certainly can be expected to protect you. I live in New Orleans , and after Hurricane Katrina, if you would have seen what happened here, you wouldn't ask such an absurd question.

Yes.
If the 2nd ammendment right was taken away, the criminals would all still have illegal handguns.
The law abiding citizens would be at the mercy of police response time.
