I think the violence in ANY religion, including Islam, comes from how people interpret it. I've seen people take things out of the Bible and turn it into violent junk, so it's about perceptions. The same goes for the position of women in Islam. Many Muslimahs LOVE hijab, and feel Islam is kind to them and if they're in a tolerant country that doesn't chain them according to cultural baggage. Aminah Assilmi absolutely FIGHTS to make people understand that many good, thinking women LOVE Islam and feel it protects them. It all depends on how you view how women are to be treated.

Both. Only because of what is written in the Quran.

The criticisms of the Jews in the Quran resulted in the persecution of Jews in Muslim lands--often slavery, deportation, land expropriation, and massacres, resulting from the permanent, uniquely Islamic institutions of jihad and dhimmitude. They had to wear on their clothes the image of an ape. Specifically, the 9th century Tunisian Qadi, Ahmed b. Talib compelled the dhimmi Jews to wear upon their shoulder a patch of white cloth (riqa') that bore the image of an ape, [the Christians were required to wear the image of a pig], and to nail onto their doors a board bearing the sign of a monkey. Apes are mentioned in Judaic texts, but zoomorphic signs were never imposed in the Jewish kingdoms, as was done for Jews and Christians in Islamic lands. Hence the actual implementation of such discriminatory zoomorphic badges is particular to Islam, and the reasons for this must be examined independently, and honestly, without any reference to Judaism.

Jihadists today invoke the Quran to justify the worst terrorist crimes. Throat slitting of infidels is mentioned in the Quran. Al-Mawardi (d. 1058), the prominent 11th century jurist quoted this verse, specifically, « When you encounter those who deny (the Truth) then strike (their) necks. » (Quran 47 :4), in his learned discussion of jihad. This ritual execution is also mentioned in other Muslim legal texts and in narratives of Christian and prominent Muslim historians. Today it is performed against infidels and recorded on videotape for the edification of Muslim audiences.

When the average pious Muslim reads a verse like 2:132 (“And this was the legacy that Abraham left to his sons, and so did Jacob; ‘Oh my sons! Allah hath chosen the Faith for you; then die not except in the Faith of Islam’”) or 3:67 (“Abraham was not a Jew nor yet a Christian; but he was true in Faith, and bowed his will to Allah’ (which is Islam), and he joined not gods with Allah”), he understands what so many imams tell him: that the true Jews and Christians of today are the Muslims, and the people who go by those names are renegades and rebels against God.

This is of course nonsense.

MOST of the big organized religions have been perverted at some point in order to promote hate and murder:
christian crusades
Islamic jihad
god telling the Jews of the bible to go to war for him, etc etc.

The question should be "Does any major religion still offer a good cost/benefit ratio?"
In other words, are we getting to the point where organized religion is causing humanity MORE ignorance, death, hatred, and evil motivation, than the help it gives to humanity?

As far as Islam's treatment of women goes, yes, it treats women with more disrespect than any other organized religion. Did you know that Muslim men PROTESTED a new law in Iran last week that said women no longer needed 4 male witnesses to accuse a man of rape? THEY PROTESTED THE LAW!!!!! Sounds to me like they want to go on raping women without having to worry about getting caught.

I think that with every religion there are extremists, and I believe that the Koran (Quran) to Americans is an extreme religion being that we have been taught to value women in our society as a part of our culture, NOT religion, unless you are wiccan, etc. Even in the bible women are mainly portrayed as "bare foot and pregnant", and many violent acts - so it also those who act out what these books are telling one to do in the way they feel it should be done.

Islam in its purest sense is not violent nor restrictive to women. That being said, however, it must always be remembered that irregardless of whatever religion one is talking about there will always be those who will take any opportunity to distort the religion into a force for power over others. This goes for the same as the national religion of the U.S., which is Christianity. This is why the violent and strong will always rule the weak and gentle. World history is proof.

No, I do not think Islam itself is violent. I do think, however, that some of the followers, mainly the men, do not know how to follow it and choose instead to follow what their fathers followed. Instead of giving the women their God given rights as is commanded in the Quran and hadith, and being real men, they ignore those commands and exploit the so called power they have over their wives. They misuse the verse that orders her to obey him but ignore the fact that they are supposed to consult with her in all matters and treat her as well as the Prophet (PBUH) treated his wives.

If the muslims of today were to follow the life of the Prophet (PBUH) there would be none of this going on. There would be no sects. There would be no differences that mattered so much that it was worthy of death. Women would be just as much a part of society as the men and the countries would flourish.

Use your eyes your mind in judging if an action is right or wrong. Plain simple common sense is all you need, to know. But maybe you should pray for wisdom and righteousness to the omniscient God above to see the real truth.

Is a woman allowed to pray in a mosque with the men? No. If a woman is raped under Sharia Law, doesn't she have to produce multiple males witnesses? Yes. What kind of man would stand there and watch a violent crime take place and not help? A Muslim man apparently. Women are not treated with respect, dignity or equality under Islam.
