ok, the guys from MN have it right, 4" for foot traffic, 6" for atv/snowmobile, 8 for a SMALL car, and 10" for a pick-up, and 12+" for anything larger.

for the first trip on ANY lake it is best to treat it like it is frist ice. walk ahead of any vehicle, checking the ice with a spud as you go. if the ice is real thick it will be safe for later unassisted treks with vehicles.

personally i have been out on 2" of ice but special precautions must be used to do that. not recommended for the faint of heart or the not so serious icefisherman ( or woman).

This one question that I had to answer for you safety. I have fished 4 inches safely but always keep in mind that lakes, ponds and gravel pits may have springs in them that are giving out warmer water. I have fished 6 inches of ice and walked about 20 feet and found 2 inches. pretty scary. Never ice fish alone and both you and your buddie should carry a rope in your buckets. I am a avid ice fisherman but also hope I am a safe one.

You can ice fish with just a coating of ice on the water. But if you want to sit on the ice and not fall in, the number is 4".

Celt nailed it exactly. Minnesota is ice fishing crazy. In the winter, they actually plow "roads" on Mille Lacs lake so you can drive to your ice fishing spot. After sufficient ice thickness of course.
