As stated above, it is highly recommended that if you are purchasing a puppy you do not go to a pet shop. These puppies often do come from puppy mills that keep animals in horrible conditions and are not careful about their breeding practices resulting in genetic defects including but not limited to hip dysplasia, temperament problems, hearing loss, etc.

If you are willing to adopt a dog or puppy who needs a home, I highly recommend www.petfinder.com which will allow you to search for resuces/shelters in your area and even allows you to see pictures of available pets.

If you are set on buying from a breeder find a reputable one.

If you want a purebreed dog then you should never buy from a store that sells puppies or kittens. Most, if not all, of those dogs come from puppy mills. Find a rescue group in your area for that particular breed and they will be able to put you in touch with reputable breeders.

DO NOT BUY any pup from a pet shop!!!! puppymills sell thru them and you don't know the health of the pup, nor the living conditions of them before they arrived at the shop. Most of them have lived in filthy conditions and you are just looking for a heartache. They are cute and seem fine when you see them, but a few days down the road when they get sick and die or cost you a large vet bill to keep them alive you will realize your mistake. What kind of pup are you looking for? try www.puppyfind.com and you will find for the most part reputable breeders.
