I just bought my husband an AKC certified black lab puppy. I have the papers, I saw pictures of his entire litter and saw the parents. My question is. This is a black lab puppy, but it looks like a rottweiler puppy! It has brown feet and little brown spots on its eyes. It is completely adorable but I've never seen or heard of a lab colored like this. The breeder said its because a dog on the mothers side, her grandfather or something, had the same problem.

Dont worry! The breeder didnt try to trick me into buying it by telling me it was rare. He was selling it cheaper than the other puppies because of the coloring. And dont worry! I wont breed it and pass on the bad gene! :) Thanks for all of your answers!!

It can occur, although any color other than solid black, chocolate or yellow is a disqualification
According to this site
http://www.blueknightlabs.com/color/coatcolor.html
"However, other colors can, and do, occur. Brindling, black and tan, dilution of the chocolate gene which gives a chocolate a gray (or silver) appearance. These colors are a disqualifying fault, and are incorrect for the breed.
Do not be fooled into buying a puppy in any breed that the breeder claims has a "rare" color for that breed. A reputable breeder will tell you if a puppy has a mismark or incorrect coloration and will require you to spay or neuter that dog to prevent the reoccurance of the disqualifying fault.
Mismarked or incorrect coloration does not affect the ability for the affected dog to be be a good pet. A labrador is a labrador regardless of its coat color."
Here is a page with photos of mismarked labs.

That happens sometimes. It is a mutation in the Agouti Alleles and the Melanocortin-1 Receptor (the genes that code for coat color). According the AKC guidlines he would be disqualified in a show. That doesn't mean he won't be a good dog for retrieving, hunting or just playing in the yard with. You could breed him if you want try breeding him to a chocolate or a yellow, this will hopefully cause all the offspring to be either yellow or brown then the spots shouldn't show through.

Never heard of it. a female can birth pups from more than one male. Did all the pups look like this? I would question it. Labs are a solid color, chocolate, black, yellow, or white. not mixed. Look at the AKC standard for the Black Lab = be informed.

Interesting. I have never heard of a black lab that looked like a Rottie. Even though the dog has papers you probably wouldn't be able to show it as it has "faults" (improper markings).
Check out this website though!!! It's about a lab that is BOTH black AND yellow!! Very neat!

this is known to be true and it can happen. my son got a german sheperd and it was long haired and shorter when it got older. i looked up all the info i could and it is true some breeds go back to a way off generation of some of its great grandparents.
it could be a trick or not. but it is up to you how you handle it. look it up or take the mans word. my sister bought a chihuahua once turned out to be a mini pinscher and the woman she bought it from sold all the puppies with falsified papers. i am not saying this is what happened to you but check out all your options. and your vet could be a great help

It happens. I have Newfies and we sometimes see a "black and tan" Newf crop up. You don't WANT to see it, and it should be EXCLUDED from ANY breeding program!!!!!!! The breeder you bought from is not a good breeder. You do not breed or breed to dogs that carry that gene. Spay or neuter it!!!!
