Just good taste and experience in the business.

Some do it with high school, some go to design school. But an eye for it is the most important thing, followed by an apprenticeship with someone in the field.

Right now I'm learning online @ Pennfoster.com. I used think I new a lot about interior design, by watching TLC's Trading Spaces and While You Were Out, but reading about it is different. One example: I used to have trouble on what color to paint the walls to match everything. Now I know about complementarty colors, which colors go good together. I used to say paint everything tan, now I use the right color for the design. Also you could work in some department store that have Showroom or Displays. If you want to be an Interior Decorator, you need one to two year certification programs. If you want to be an Interior Designer, then you'll probally need an Assocate's Degree in Interior Design or higher (45 credits in design). Also there are exams for Interior Designers like; NCIDQ (National Council for Interior Design Qualifications).
