I want to mount a plasma TV above the fireplace, but that height is too high for viewing. I would like the plasma to be able to be lowered when watching TV and then be raised to above the fireplace when I want to use the fireplace. By the way, I am thinking about a 50" plasma. Any ideas?

Your best bet is to bite the bullet and purchase an articulating mount. They will cost between $400.00-$500.00. You may end up spending the same amount if you purchase a standard mount and take it to a fabrication shop to have it modified. Also, if you change your unit out in the future, it may require additional modification to accommodate the new mount.
Bottom line; Buy the best first and only cry once.
You will not be disappointed with the viewing options with the articulated mount!

mounting a plasma TV (~2000+) over the fireplace will probably ruin the power supply (~500) in short order. modifying a fireplace is not a good idea unless a professional and insured. This type of DIY generally create home fires. but if your going to do it use the same gage wire that feeding what your getting the power from. do not use 14 when there might be a 20A circuit and #12 wire

There are several manufacturers that make a mounting system like that. The most popular system is made by Sanus.
Best Buy and Future Shop both carry them.

what you're looking for is called an articulating mount. They got them, but they're not cheap.

Check out a company called Peerless.

You could ask a local fabrication shop to make a swing down, or slide down arm that will do what you want
