A frontal lobotomy was an operation that was performed with an instrument resembling an ice pick. The instrument was hammered through the bone area behind one of the eyes, then moved from side to side to separate the pre-frontal lobe from the rest of the brain. John Kennedy's sister had this operation and did not live very long after it.

Lobotomies have been used in the past to treat a wide range of mental illnesses including schizophrenia, clinical depression, and various anxiety disorders.

It was a surgery done in the 1930's to alleviate behavior associated with mental illness. They truly thought this would work. A doctor would insert an ice pick type surgical tool above the eyeball and cut the connective tissue between the frontal lobes of the brain. This left most patients incapacitated after it was done.
