Of course they do. Supermarkets put those things at kid eye level for a reason.

They can bug you about it, but you don't have to give in. I told my guys right off the bat that they need to eat a healthy meal before they get treats. We'd make a deal: go home and have a nutritious meal, then we'll go back to the store and buy the candy with their chore money...they either forget about the candy entirely, or they realize that they'd rather buy a Matchbox car with that money.

Worked every time...

Of course! I have a 2 year old, 10, and 9. The trick is with the older ones they know if they don't have the money, don't ask. with the baby I give him a sucker when we get to the store and push the cart passed the candy when I get up to the checkout so he can't beg for it or grab it down.

No. Before we walk into a store, I give clear expectations to my kids, including asking about candy or other stuff at the checkout. I may say that they can choose something out of one of the vending machines at the front, or say that we are not purchasing anything from them today, depending on attitudes, etc. They really don't even ask anymore, come to think about it...

My kids do not always ask, but they know that sometimes mom will say yes and sometimes I will say no- of course the yes answer always gets a thank you and a hug, but with a no I do not get a fit- The first couple times I did, but I would say "no, not today, you need to wait for another day." then my daughter would chime back "wait?" and me with a "yes" and that was the end of arguement. Teaching my kids the word wait has been a miracle word for me. I can always say "wait" whether it be 5 mins or 5 months, and the kids will listen.

i did bother my parents, but they rarely caved. Now i'm an adult w/ no kids, and I still buy candy in the checkout, just because I can.

My husband does!! I guess he grew up getting a candy at the end of a grocery shopping trip, and still likes getting them! My kids do not, and they never will for the sake of being good. Maybe every now and then just because I suggested, not to bribe!

Keep your light off and you won't have as trick or treaters. I think that most parents take their kids to parties or to a church event now, so trick or treating is not as common. Also each city has "the" neighborhood where the treats are the best and after a few blocks of them, you have enough anyways.

My daughter never asks but she stands there starring at the candy hoping Ill buy her something. I think I'd rather her just ask because its quite embarrassing :) Im not one of those parents who say no to candy everytime, usually if she asks I say yes but she has to wait till after lunch, dinner.... She has to use her allowance though so she usually wont buy it because she doesnt want to waste her money.

No, she can't see anything but the inside of my uterus, much less whine for candy. And she has yet to hit me with a spontaneous craving while I'm in line.
