There are a lot of very good, very inexpensive "ethnic" restaurants in Chinatown and in the East Village. Just walk through the neighborhoods, read the menus and pick one. Restaurant prices are often much cheaper for lunch than at dinner.
If you like Indian food, check out the menus on East 6th Street near First Avenue - you can eat very well for less then $10;
My favorite Mexican restaurant - Del Valle on Tenth Avenue and 47th Street -Puebla style cooking - not Tex Mex - this is the real deal - excellent fish and shrimp dishes - large portions that come with salad and rice and beans and tortillas. The most expensive dish is the seafood soup (it's great) $14. There are at least five shrimp dishes that are about $10. Many appetizers are $2. The waitresses here are very nice, but service is usually very slow.
In the East Village, a Thai restaurant I like is Holy Basil on Second Avenue between 9th and 10th.
There are two very inexpensive Polish restaurants: Little Poland on Second Avenue between 12th and 13th, and one block over is Christines - on First Avenue between 12th and 13th Streets.
Enjoy your visit!

I think in the video games they do race through the streets of NY but not in Nascar reality. That would not make any sense. Do you know the insurance NY would have to have to pull something like that? Liability? Wow Bloomberg--would be the laughing stock (pun intended) In addition, Nascar would not do either because of the unsafeness of it (pedestrians, etc.) Liability? Insurance?--for Nascar. Furthermore, there is a noise ordinance in NY. NY is made of large, tall buildings which if a Nascar ran thorough the streets would cause the sound to amplify 2X as much, so that is another reason why it would not work out.

I would check out foodnetwork.com and find Rachel Ray's list of $40 a day. She has several places to chow down in NY.

there's a good place across the street from Niagra Falls but I can't remember the name. Maybe someone can help. They serve your food on car hubcaps. It's neat and the food is not expensive and very good.
