Probably a leftover "race" memory from our ancestry as arboreal primates! The ones who fell and survived would retain the fear of falling, both as a caution (to be more careful when up high) and due to the fear of death. Those who died wouldn't pass on ANY memories (of that anyhow), so that's probably why most people never hit the ground when they dream about falling!

Once humans spent less time in trees, they probably had repeated experiences with falling and fear of heights. This, too, would be passed on to us.

And yes, I"m presuming we ARE descended from ape-like creatures and more advanced homonids. If you believe otherwise, I don't know how you'd explain it!

Everybody has insecurities, and falling in a dream symbolizes the lack of control we have over our lives that everyone fears.

I don't know, but I know I've had it before. Then I shake really hard and wake up with my heart beating 100 mph. Weird.
