Ruderal means growing in refuse or waste ground. These are typically the result of dumping or spoil from mining or agriculture activities. Examples include strip mine tailings, salt pans from irrigation, abandoned crop fields, and landfills. Ruderal plants are the first to colonize such habitats, and tend to predominate for several seasons until certain native plants become reestabilished. Ruderal habitata are recognized by the evidence of human activity that has dispoiled the native biome.
