Ruderal means growing in refuse or waste ground.

They start after someone severely alters the physical features of an area. A ruderal area can occur from abandoned gravel roads and parking areas, rail yards, places where toxic chemical were spilled, disturbed soil surfaces like scraping off the organic soil layer with a bulldozer, or any other activity that creates an environment that doesn't support natural plant succession that would otherwise occur.
